I am particularly concerned about the plight of those people within the Soviet Union who are persecuted for their religious beliefs. and with the recent intensification of the attacks on Soviet Jewish communities. Over 20 percent of the entire world Jewish population resides in the Soviet Unionmore than 2.5 million people who are deprived of their basic human rights. Because they are Jews. because they have expressed a desire to emigrate. their jobs are taken away. they are expelled from schools and universities. and they are denounced by their neighbors. They are forbidden to study Hebrew or to practice their religion. Many are currently serving time in labor camps for refusing to renounce their culture and their beliefs.
