It Is also estimated that 1 million people or 20 percent of the population of El Salvador is externally or internally displaced. Half a million are still in Central America. particularly Honduras. Guatemala. Mexico. and El Salvador itself. Another half a million are in the United States. INS has estimated that 250.000 of these Salvadorans have entered since January 1980. There are approximately 65.000 Salvadorans in the metropolitan Washington. DC. area alone. The United States has repatriated. through deportation or voluntary departure. approximately 35.000 Salvadorans in the last 5 years. Thousands of Salvadorans have applied for political asylum. but only 3.3 percent have been granted such status. This figure is drastically lower than such countries as Iran.
