In 1886. this gift represented an astounding technological achievement and was symbolic of the founding principles of the United States. For millions of people seekiag freedom from oppression. freedom of opportunity. and/or freedom from want. the first sight of America was the Statue of Liberty. Their first steps on American soil were at the National Immigration Center on Ellis Island near the Statue of Liberty. For my relatives coming over from Italy. the view of the Statue of Liberty and the passage through the Ellis Island Immigration Center were memories that fanned the flames of freedom. Today. 99 years later. another astounding technological achievement is taking place as the Statue of Liberty is being restored. This project is planned for completion in time for Lady Libertys 100th birthday.
