That journey of little over a milethe trip from Ellis Island to the mainlandwas short in distance but lengthy in anxiety. If Liberty lifted her lamp beside the golden door. as Emma Lazarus wrote. then Ellis Island was the golden door. Over 100 million Americans today are descendants of the 17 million weary persons who passed by the Statue of Liberty. and on through the golden door of Ellis Island. In 1892. the island was the Nations first. largest. and most important immigration station. The largest of the 33 structures is the 200footlong brick and limestone registration building. Many older Americans still remember climbing the long stairs to the great hall. and the vast expanses of its vaulted spaces.
