In 1980 Tarnopolskl joined a group of Refuseniks in a protest hunger strike at the time of the opening of the Madrid Conference. his telephone was immediately disconnected thereafter. In August 1981. Tarnopolskys home was raided by police and many of his books and papers were confiscated. On the same day. Alexander Paritsky was arrested. In October 1982. Yuri Tarnoposky went on a 40day hunger strike to protest his denial of permission to emigrate. In May of the same year. he signed a Refusenik protest letter and later composed an article describing the ordeal he and other Refuseniks had endured. On March 15. 1983.
