Speaker. I would like to set aside a moment to reflect once again on the plight of Soviet Jews. Early last week. my colleagues appropriately highlighted the condition of the Jews in the Soviet Union who wish to practice their religious beliefs and to exercise the freedom to emigrate. These "re. fusenika" have suffered from harassment. loss of jobs. and in some cases imprisonment and exile to Siberia. I would like to emphasize that. while this issue deserved special attention in light of the celebration of Rosh Hashana and the visit of Soviet Foreign Minister Andrei Gromyko. we must recognise that the persecution of Soviet Jews is a continuing concern.
