Not only was she the wife of a great American President. Franklin Roosevelt. but in her own right she made a significant contribution to all Americans and all the world. President Truman recognized this and called her the first lady of the world. Mr. Truman appointed Mrs. Roosevelt to be a U.S. Representative to the U.N. General Assembly. She served in that capacity from 1946 through 1952 in the U.N. General Assemblys Third Committee on Social and Humanitarian Affairs where she dealt with many refugee and human rights issues. President Truman also appointed her U.S. Representative to the Commission on Human Rights.
