Chernenko took office. It is important for us. as Members of Congress. to take every opportunity which presents itself in order to advance the cause of the thousands of men and women whose only desire is to practice their religion freely with their family and friends. The emigration figures are so low as to be statistically nonexistent. From a high of over 51.000 in 1979. almost 1.000 a week. emigration plummeted to 652 between January and August of this year. Based on those figures we can estimate that this years total figures will equal 1 weeks emigration in 1979. So far. to date. only 1 month has produced over 100 emigrees from the Soviet Union. and that was in May. In July and in August only a mere 85 were allowed to leave.
