Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980260520

Speaker. the situation for the 2.5 million Jews living in the Soviet Union is distressing. Clearly. we should do everything possible to encourage people in the United States to send food. clothing. and medicine to the Soviet Union because those items of subsistence are desperately needed. As many of my colleagues are aware. many Soviet Jews who apply to emigrate are routinely dismissed from their jobs and must rely on others for basic consumer goods. These packages serve as a vital lifeline to many Soviet Jews. Efforts such as this to help alleviate the suffering and misery of Soviet Jews must be combined with an ongoing and vigorous effort to speak out on behalf of all Soviet Jews.
