Mr. Speaker. once again. Members of this body come to the floor to speak out for religious freedom. for the right of free emigration. for basic human rights. Many times we have come to speak out for freedom. hoping that our voices will be heard. but with the knowledge that the situation for Jews in the Soviet Union only gets worse. In recent months. officially sanctioned antiSemitism has become commonplace in the media. Arrests of Hebrew teachers have greatly increased and the declining emigration figures from January through August of this yearonly 652all bear out the increasing hardships meted out to the Jewish population of the Soviet Union. And so we speak out. because silence is complicity. We speak out to let other peoples of the world know that suppression. terror. and institutionalized antiSemitism will never be tolerated.
