Mr. President. a recent article in the Washington Post recounted the deportation of Nazi war criminal. Valerian Trifa. The Justice Department became interested in Romanianborn Trifa when it was learned that he had obtained his U.S. citizenship illegally. When he became a U.S. citizen in 1957. Trifa swore that he had never been a member of any Nazi or Fascist organizations. including the Iron Guard. By 1980. according to the Washington Post. the Justice Department had proven that: Trifa was a leader from 1936 until 1942 of the notorious Romanian Iron Guard. an antiSemitic organization whose members dressed in uniforms almost identical to the Nazi Gestapos.
