Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980257194

These policies are a disgrace to our country and the democratic values America is supposed to represent. Ending Pretorias cruel and illegal treatment of its black population in South Africa and Namibia must become a higher priority for the United States. The brutality with which the South African military massacred the Cassinga settlement. killing 600 Namibian refugees. symbolizes its absolute disain for international law. and its lack of interest in providing fair treatment to the black people of the region. The poverty and dispair which resuits from apartheid demand a critical reexamination of American policy. A Washington Post article earlier this year reported the devastating effects of the income gap between the black majority and the white minority in South Africa.
