Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980254634

President. all of us must be concerned about the continuing repression of Jews in the Soviet Union. During my visit to that country earlier this year. one of my most moving experiences was the meeting I had with a noted "refusenik." Naum Meiman. Talking with him and learning of the difficult life he has had since he first began his effort to emigrate from the Soviet Union served as a chilling reminder of what life is like for Soviet Jews. I have recently learned of the case of another "refusenik." Aleksander Yakir. a young Jew convicted of "draft evasion" about a month ago in the Soviet Union. Yakir is faced with the possibility of spending the next 2 years in a prison or labor camp.
