Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980249188

Mr. Speaker. about 6 weeks ago. during the floor debate on the immigration bill. H.R. 1510. I read into the RECORD an excerpt from an article which appeared in the Los Angeles Times on June 19. 1984. The article describes of employment discrimination in California that are already occurring as a result of the publicity surrounding the SimpsonMazzoli bill. Mr. Speaker. many of my colleagues refuse to believe that employer sanctions would cause discrimination. This article documents what we in the Hispanic community have predicted from the very beginning of the dabate over employer sanctionsthat some employers would respond to the threat of sanction by discriminating against Hispanics and other individuals who may look or sound foreign.
