Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980239246

The number of major uprisings in the past 25 years suggests that many Tibetans are strongly opposed to the imposition of Chinese military rule. When the Tibetan leader. the Dalai Lama. was forced to flee in 1959. as many as 100.000 Tibetans followed him and settled in India. Nepal. Bhutan. and Sikkim. These refugees have managed to retain their national identity. and they have become a symbol of freedom to the Tibetans controlled by the Chinese military. The Chinese Government has had to keep a tremendous troop force in Tibet in order to maintain dictatorial control. Because the alleged cruel policies have resulted in a horrifying number of deaths.
