Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980236639

Cyprus has existed as a divided nation. its people living with the memory of that terrible day in 1974 when humanitarian and economic chaos was inflicted on them by the invading Turks. Along with the survivors of the invasion. we remember the 200.000 Greek Cypriots who were forced to flee from their homes as their property and belongings were confiscated. Today. our hearts go out to those who must live as refugees in their own landtheir ancestral homes lying out of reach behind the lines of the Turkish occupation army. Today we grieve with them for the thousands of their country men and women who died. and for the thousands of others whose fate is still unknown. The human tragedy of the past decade. which we commemorate today. is inextricably linked to the political questions to which no resolution has been found.
