It is imperative that the Commission be expeditiously established. for 8 years is little time to prepare for our celebration of this landmark event. Plans are already underway in other nations. and in particular in Spain and Italy. to participate in events to honor Columbus great accomplishment. The Commission will develop. encourage. and coordinate plans for appropriate ceremonies. commemorations. and educational activities to pay tribute to the courageous and dedicated Genovese navigator whose voyages of discovery were a milestone in the history of mankind. Christopher Columbus heroically braved the myth and mysteries of the unknown Western seas to open the New World to civilization and colonization. So he is very rightly called the father of immigration. But I envision. Mr.
