To deny these rights to any individual is to deny him the decency of dignity and basic respect. Nobel Laureate Andrei Sakharov. as a leader of the human rights movement in the Soviet Union. was arrested and exiled because of his courageous stance against injustice there. His wife. Yelena Bonner. has been charged with antiSoviet agitation. In desperation. to protest the Soviet Governments harassment of his wife. and to attempt to win for her an exit visa to obtain medical treatment that she needed from abroad due to serious illnessSakharov began a hunger strike. As a result. the status and whereabouts of Dr. Sakharov and his wife have been kept secret by the Soviet Government.
