Ethiopian Jews. have been recognized as legitimate Jews. yet this community has demonstrated its tremendous courage and endurance throughout its 2.000 plus years of existence. The Falashas are a simple people who have continually suffered in order to practice the Jewish religion. In 1983. the Foreign Affairs and Foreign Relations Committees reported to Congress that major conflict between the Ethiopian Government and the Falashas exists because of the Governments attempts to completely block emigration. the lack of Hebrew instruction. and the Falashas resistence to MarxistLeninist doctrine. Baruch Tegegne. who emigrated from Ethiopia in 1974. said at a rally to call attention to the plight of the Falashas. We have given our blood to this religion. We do not have the right to practice. to go to school.
