Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980223814

The reason they have left Guatemala is harassment and brutality. sometimes actual killing by the Guatemalan army against mostly Mayan Indians. They live for the most part in rural areas. sometimes theirhomesare burned. destroyed. sometimes entire villages are leveled and destroyed. I cannot understand this harassment and brutality and killing against the Indian population in Guatemala. But the result of it has been that the Indians have sought to leave Guatemala. They are not rebels nor insurgents against the Government of Guatemala. but the brutality and the killing has forced them to leave their land. to leave their homes. to leave their villages and seek asylum and safety in Mexico.
