Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980219589

Mr. Chairman. I have never liked the immigration bill. I would like to have the luxury of voting against it. Its central feature. amnesty. is not a solution. Its a copout. To say that we are solving the problem of illegal immigration by declaring illegals legal is the exact equivalent of curing poverty by declaring poor people rich. Amnesty is also immoral from the standpoint that hundreds of thousands of foreign nationals are patiently and legally waiting years for the privilege of U.S. citizenship. They obey our law and get nothing. Illegals break our law and we give them the priceless treasure of U.S. citizenship.
