Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980219545

The Austin American Statesman. in a recent editorial. stated: "It is past time to deal with the problem. and it wont get better by waiting." While I do not agree with all of the provisions in the bill or all of amendments that have been adopted. I believe that this is the only practical solution we have. Immigration reform is a particularly sensitive issue in my district in central Texas and I have heard from many constituents who oppose some aspect or another of this bill. But no one has been able to convince me that there is a better solution or that by waiting another year or another decade that the situation will improve or that the solutions will be easier. This is a difficult vote for all of us and each of us may have some doubts about this bill.
