Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980218997

Speaker. I have received numerous inquiries from colleagues indicating growing congressional interest in the case of Michael ORourke. Specifically. their interest and mine has been the withdrawal of the Federal immigration judge hearing that case. His withdrawal occurred under what must be described. at the very least. as curious circumstances. The case involves Michael ORourke. a 32yearold Irish citizen. whom the Immigration and Naturalization Service seeks to deport. He has been confined without bail in the maximum security facility of the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City since November 1979. and holds the record as the longest held prisoner on deportation charges without bail in the history of the Immigration and Naturalization Service. I first became interested in this case when I served in the Pennsylvania Legislature and cosponsored legislation supporting Mr. ORourke.
