Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980217908

What concerns me is that we. under this amendment. would force these individuals who may not even be literate in their own language. to go to a school to learn English and to learn American history. Now if we had a policy in the United States where we would send Ambassadors to different countries of the world and that those Ambassadors be fluent in the country in which they served. I would then say to the gentleman that he is correct in demanding that these immigrants learn the language of this country. We do not have that provision in the United States of America. We send Ambassadors to different countries. they do not speak the language of that country. they have to speak through interpreters.
