Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980217445

Mr. Speaker. in just a few moments we will continue the debate on the SimpsonMazzoli immigration bill and I would just like to make a comment as to why I oppose the amnesty provision. I recognize that we are a nation of immigrants and our culture and history is rich with diversity and strengths from these immigrants. But I feel that we are not a lawless nation. and in fact. I think that is why many people come to this country. because of our laws and our heritage and our traditions of abiding by laws. I think to grant amnesty in the same bill in which we are trying to control our borders is a mistake and would be sending the wrong signal.
