Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980213828

Because we are discussing immigration today. I only mention in passing my disappointment in this action because the 4percent cut not only hurt Immigration and Naturalization and border patrol but drug enforcement. FBI. the courts. Funding for the entire criminal justice system was decimated by that 4percent acrosstheboard cut. Now. many of my colleagues. the socalled crime fighters who come to this well every week and inquire about the status of crime legislation. are among the members who voted for this 4percent acrosstheboard cut. Now. ladies and gentlemen. the point I am trying to make is that if we are really serious about doing something about our borders. about the number of illegal aliens. whether it be 2 to 6 million or 6 to 10 millionnobody knowsif we are really serious about getting a handle on the immigration problems in this country. then we have got to provide resources to these agencies. You know. law enforcement is a laborintensive industry. You need manpower. indepth investigations. You need to secure the border and/or develop initiatives with other countries if we are to do something significant about our problems with illegal aliens.
