Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980213399

Let me quickly point out that there have been a lot of erroneous statements about the criminal penalties we are seeking for employers here. It is not the employers who are doing the smuggling. It is not the employers who are doing the transporting of undocumented workers. There are criminal penalties on the books of up to 2 years and/or a $5.000 fine for doing just that. so we do have criminal penalties. Do not say that is peanuts. Those kinds of sentences are imposed almost daily in my district by the Federal court. I want to say to the gentleman that those laws that we have on the books are being enforced as best we can with the limited number of border patrol and immigration officials that this administration has been willing to request. I think that it is time that we separate out the issue of smuggling from my amendment. Now.
