I am appalled by the refusal of the Soviet authorities to respond in a decent and humane way to the request of Andrei Sakharov that his wife be allowed to leave the Soviet Union in order to obtain medical treatment. Governments are put on Earth to serve people. not the other way around. Any individual in the world should have a right to travel freely. The action taken against the Sakharovs is not only appalling. it is stupid as well. Their cruel treatment of the Sakharovs and the Soviet refusal to allow thousands of Soviet Jews to leave the country does more damage to the Soviets image in the world than would a massive flight of political refugees. The worlds attention once again is not only focused on the inadequacies of the Soviet system. but also
