Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980189173

Mr. Speaker. with Soviet Jewish emigration at an all time low and new leadership taking hold in the Soviet Union. it is imperative that we in Congress make clear our continued commitment to Soviet Jews. The resolution introduced by my colleagues from New York. Ms. FERRARO and Mr. GILMAN reasserts our belief in human freedom. freedom to keep families together and the freedom to practice ones religion without persecution. It is crucial that we send this message to the Soviet leadership. to the people of the Soviet Union. and to the people of this country who have been so supportive of efforts to reverse the tide of Soviet emigration which has fallen dramatically in the last 5 years. But more disturbing even than the statistics is the antiSemitic campaign being waged in the Soviet Union. Under an official sanctioned AntiZionist Committee. the Soviets have mounted a deliberate campaign to discredit the practice of Judaism. linking zionism with Naziism and telling the world that no more Soviet Jews wish to emigrate. What is more. religious classes have been broken up. ceremonies disrupted and families threatened if they spoke out. Anatoly Shcharansky. for whom the House unanimously passed my resolution of support last year. still languishes in prison for this efforts on behalf of Soviet Jews.
