Mr. President. today we remember the atrocities done to the Armenian people in Turkey in the early years of this century. The genocide of the Armenians involved the killing of some 1.5 million people in the land of the Ottoman Empire. and the scattering of thousands more. Armenians were forcibly deported across Asia Minor. They were persecuted. banished. and slaughtered while much of Europe was engaged in World War I. The height of the activity occurred in 1915. At the time. America registered strong protests. U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Henry Morgenthau offered protests to the slaughter he chronicled. America offered its hand of relief to the survivors.
