Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980184494

Mr. President. today I am pleased to Join in recognizing Solidarity Sunday for Soviet Jewry. Soviet Jewry faces a crisis In emigration. In 1979. Jewish emigration reached a highpoint of 51.320. In 1982. the number plummeted to 2.688. Last year. a mere 1.314 Soviet Jews were allowed to emigrate. To date in 1984 only 229 have been allowed to leave. Clearly this disturbing trend merits concern and condemnation. As disturbing as these numbers are. it is even more unsettling to recognize the vicious turn that Soviet policy has taken. In April of last year. the Soviet Government organized an official AntiZionist Committee to renounce Zionism. hasten forced assimilation and foster antiSemitism.
