Speaker. today marks the 69th anniversary of the start of the first planned genocide of the 20th century. On April 24. 1915. the intellectual and spiritual leaders of the Armenian community in Turkey were arrested and sent into an exile that many would not survive. Once the leaders were removed. a systematic program for uprooting and deporting nearly all of the Armenians in Turkey was begun. That program would result in the deaths of more than 1 million people and the virtual obliteration of the Armenian population in Turkey. Today we acknowledge the pain and suffering of these men. women. and children who died for no other reason than the fact they were Armenians.
