When World War I broke out. the young Turk Government decided that the Armenian "danger" must be ended to avoid "fifth column" activity. Beginning in April 1915. Armenians all over Anatolia were rounded up on short notice and sent marching toward the desert wastes of Syria. Men were usually killed outright. Few individuals reached their intended place of exile as they were massacred en route. others were killed on arrival. Horrible atrocities took place. A few Armenians were saved by Turks who ignored the deportation orders or who took Armenians into their homes. but the bulk of the Empires Armenians perished. Some fled to what became Soviet Armenia. Today. historians argue about the number of Armenians actually killed.
