Discrimination is a national problem requiring a national solution. that was recognized by our colleagues who enacted the 1964 Civil Rights Act. and is worthy of our support today. It is the responsibility of those of us who are currently Members of Congress to carry forward the banner that this country is the land of equality. As one of the few Members of Congress who was a refugee to this country. I am proud to say that my family came to this country because it was the land of equality and opportunity for all people regardless of race. religion. or sex. I feel a special obligation to vigilantly guard those values. and I have done so and will continue to do so.
