Between 1915 and 1917. more than 1 million Armenians were forced to leave their homes and march hundreds of miles. while being denied food supplies and water. Nearly half died during the march. Those remaining often died of starvation. In all. more than 2 million people were affected by the deportation policy. As U.S. Ambassador Henry Morgenthau. who served in Turkey from 191316. observed: Homes were literally uprooted. families were separated. men killed. women and girls violated daily on the way or taken to harems.
