Shcharansky had become too vocal for the Soviet Government. Government authorities saw he had become a threatin a repressive society. such threatening actions are dealt with mercilessly. The authorities. fearing further unrest. not only attempted to quiet Anatoly Shcharanskys vocal pleas. but decided to use him as an example to intimidate other Jews. Shcharansky was given a cruel and unusual punishment. Not only was he denied the right to emigrate. but he was separated from his wife. sentenced to 13 years in prison. and forbidden from communicating with family. Anatoly Shcharansky has not been quieted. however. His pleas have led to worldwide support for his cause.
