Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980166635

But this fact is not selfevident to Americans because we are isolated from the threat to Soviet Jews. We must raise our level of consciousness to this problem. because the struggle of the Soviet Jew is reflective of the struggle of oppressed groups everywhere. Today. the anniversary of the arrest of Anatoly Shcharansky is an appropriate occassion. Shcharansky was a member of the now defunct Helsinki human rights watch group in the Soviet Union. and a leader for the cause of Jewish emigration rights. He was arrested and charged with treason and antiSoviet agitation and propaganda. He currently serves time in a special regimented labor camp.
