Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980166555

Indeed. the injustices which are occurring today in the Soviet Union have gained worldwide attention and action. That is the second significance of this date: that it has been designated as "International Day of Concern for Soviet Jews" and that. in communities across America. concerned groups will be holding special meetings. rallies. and seminars. In my own district in Manhattan. the AntiDefamation League of Bnai Brith was joined today by a number of leadership organizations in New Yorks Hispanic community in a rally across from the Soviet Mission to protest the virtual cessation of Soviet Jewish emigration. In the face of all this activity and protest. however. it is difficult to remain optimistic for the future. optimistic that there will be a letup in the persecution of the refuseniks and that the gates will be opened even a crack. I and many of my colleagues here today have for years made speeches. written letters to both Soviet Jews and their oppressors. and urged our State Department on to action.
