Speaker. the continuing oppression of the human rights of all people in the Soviet Empire continues to disturb the consciences of free people everywhere. Amid the general oppression. the Jews appear to have become a special target of abuse. It is very troubling to me that antiSemitism seems increasingly to be official policy of the Soviet Union. Jews are harassed and imprisoned for practicing their religion and for struggling to preserve their cultural heritage. Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union has been cut off. It is true that persecution of religion has long been Soviet policy. and Christian believers suffer from official acts of discrimination in the Soviet Union. but Jews are subject to the special attentions of the police state.
