I had liked to bring to your attention the case of one Jewish refusenik. Isaak Shkolnik. In 1972. in an apparent effort to deter Jews in the city of Vinnitsa from applying to emigrate. Soviet authorities arrested Isaak Shkolnik on a trumpedup charge of treason. The only crime this semiskilled laborer had ever committed was seeking freedom by applying for an exit visa. The entire episode conjures the alarmingly disorienting opening line of Franz Kafkas novel "The Trial": "Someone must have traduced Joseph K. for without having done anything wrong. he was arrested one fine morning." As Isaaks case progressed. the terror was only heightened. His trial began in March 1973 behind closed doors.
