Speaker. I am pleased to participate with my colleagues in marking an International Day of Concern for Soviet Jews. Today we recognize the hundreds of thousands of Soviet Jews who seek to emigrate. so that they may practice their religion freely and study their history and culture. Their desire to be relieved of the institutional harassment and discrimination from which they suffer in the Soviet Union. and to worship with their families and their fellow believers in freedom has led them to seek to emigrate. The Soviet Government is stepping up its efforts to harass and isolate the Soviet Jewish community. Soviet authorities have embarked upon a campaign to ban Hebrew education programs. confiscate religious books and articles and give prominence to antiSemitic statements in the media.
