Among the millions who devoted their lives to the care of families and the cultivation of the vast Illinois prairie. several deserve special commendation for their leading roles in our Nations history. Jane Addams devoted her life to humanitarian causes. She founded the Chicago Social Welfare Center known as Hull House. which served the needs of the thousands of immigrantsour ancestorswho flocked to this country in search of a better life. Addams was a lifelong activist. favoring prohibition and womans suffrage. and a pacifist during World War I. She remained in the vanguard of social reform until her death in 1935. and we honor her commitment to those less fortunate.
