America is a monolingual nation. this despite our many ethnic minorities who have immigrated to these shores throughout our Nations history. In April of last year the National Commission on Excellence in Education issued a report that sent shock waves throughout the country. The report suggests that our educational inadequacies represent a severe threat to the Nations future. "We have." the Commission cautioned. "in effect. been committing an act of unthinking. unilateral educational disarmament." Strong words.
