Since the tragic June days of 1940 and 1941 when the Soviet Union invaded the Baltic States of Estonia. Latvia. and Lithuania. they have been forced into subjugation to the Soviet State. It is estimated that approximately 45.000 Lithuanians were lost to their country during this first Soviet occupation. during World War II. Many fled Soviet domination. but many thousands of others were deported to Siberia or executed when the Soviet forces retreated under German attack. When Germany began to lose its hold on Europe. Lithuania did not return to the freedom and independence it held prior to the war.
