We are all aware of the authoritarian regime that began to sweep away civil and political liberties in Lithuania after a coup in 1926. much as the tide of unlimited state power rolled across other parts of Europe. We are all aware of the harsh repression that followed the forcible and illegal annexation of Lithuania and her sister states of Latvia and Estonia by Stalins Soviet Union in 1940. Hundreds of thousands of Lithuanians were arrested. deported and executed for their courage in standing up for their national identity. their independent state. and their basic human rights. There are hundreds of thousands of Americans of Lithuanian descent who continue to share the courage and commitment of their Lithuanian kin to national identity and independence.
