Session #98 · 1983–85

Speech #980155434

This Republic. along with its sister Baltic States. was barely entering its third decade of existence when it found itself a pawn in NaziStalinist politics. The NaziSoviet "NonAggression Pact" of August 23. 1939. dealt Lithuania to the Soviets. But the nonaggression pact was shortlived. and the people of Lithuania had to endure a brutal Nazi occupation. which was then followed by Soviet reoccupation. It is estimated that until 1952. almost 500.000 Lithuanians were deported to Siberia and elsewhere in the U.S.SR. And yet armed resistance persisted in Lithuania well into the 1950s. The Lithuanian people have demonstrated time and time again their bravery and courage.
