Nor have we forgotten the repeated violations of the right to selfdetermination expressed both in the Helsinki accords and the Charter of the United Nations as it would apply to the Baltic States. The living memory of the nature of Soviet rule must serve to remind us of the importance of raising our voices in loud and repeated protest against new episodes in the history of Soviet ruthlessness against those who would fight for freedom. Such ruthlessness is exemplified by the recent imposition by proxy of martial law upon the people of Poland. the blitzkrieglike invasion of Afghanistan. and the continued imprisonment of Soviet citizens who dare to express a desire to emigrate. So long as we in the free nations of the world remember these lessons. the hope for freedom for those now subjected to Soviet domination is strong. We now see excessive Soviet military spending straining their economy to the extent that they cannot feed their own people.
