I am proud to be a cosponsor of Senate Concurrent Resolution 55. which aims at heightening the American publics awareness of the plight of Ethiopian Jews and expresses the sense of the Senate that steps should be taken to alleviate their suffering and assist them in their desire to emigrate to Israel. The history of Ethiopian Jewry extends back thousands of years. At the height of their influence in the 10th century AD. they numbered over halfmillion. Through the ensuing centuries. because of physical destruction. religious persecution. land confiscation. enslavement and forced conversion. their numbers have dwindled to the present day total of about 25.000.
