Constant antiSemitism coupled with decreasing opportunities for higher education and professional positions has prompted more and more Jews to seek emigration from the U.S.S.R. At first. only the less assimilated Jews living in Central Asia. the Caucasus and the Baltics tried to leave. but increasingly. assimilated Jews living in the Slavic republics. especially in the RSFSRRussian Republicand the Ukraine have applied to emigrate. This is significant for it appears life in the Soviet Union is becoming intolerable for more and more Jews. even those who do not identify with being Jewish. These assimilated Jews had been loyal proponents of the Soviet way of life.
