On the merits of the amendment. we. as a Nation. should do everything possible to guarantee equal opportunity for all citizens. For two centuries. this Nation has grown and prospered because we have. Equality of opportunity has been our guiding principle and it has provided hope to millions of immigrants. people of all races and religions. and those from the most humble walks of life. And so. accordingly. it is critical to the values of this Nation that we hold so dear that equality of right should not be denied on account of sex. Instead. the United States should do everything in its power to assure that women and all other citizens have the opportunity to be the very best they can be. at whatever they choose to be in life.
